EXPERTS:

Professor David Dowling has been named interim chair of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) department in the University of Michigan College of Engineering. Dowling’s appointment will begin July 1, 2021.

Interim chair, David Dowling, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

Dowling will take over for departing chair Jing Sun.

“Under her leadership, NAME has developed a strategic plan, resulting in the M-SEA vision, which positions the department for an expansive future,” said Alec D. Gallimore, the Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering.

For her part, Professor Sun looks forward to working with the new chair on the “exciting opportunities in the marine space in this transformative era of electrification, carbon neutralization, and digitalization,” and is confident, “the NAME tradition of excellence will continue under the new leadership.”

Professor Dowling joined the Mechanical Engineering faculty in 1992. He has conducted underwater acoustics and hydrodynamics research for the US Navy for more than 30 years. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society, the Acoustical Society of America and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Currently, he is working on the seventh edition of his textbook, Fluid Mechanics, the most popular first-year-graduate/advanced-undergraduate textbook on this topic.

Dowling will serve in this interim role, at the discretion of Dean Gallimore, pending Regental approval.
