Funding for New PhD Students
The University of Michigan operates under a fully funded model for all Ph.D. students. Students receive a guarantee of full funding at the point of admission and throughout their five-year program. This funding commitment is guaranteed provided the student meets all necessary milestones and fulfills program requirements as stipulated by their faculty advisor and/or department. This comprehensive package includes tuition, fees, University health insurance, and a monthly living stipend. The funding package can come from a variety of sources including the University of Michigan, College of Engineering or Rackham Graduate School fellowships, Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA) appointments or Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) positions. Some students also receive funding from documented external fellowships or any combination of the aforementioned. The typical guarantee of funding for a Ph.D. admitted directly from a bachelor’s degree program is five years while those admitted directly from a master’s degree program is four years. Exact funding amounts will vary between engineering departments.
Funding for New Master’s Students
Funding for Master’s students is limited and for the majority of new students, there is not a guaranteed funding package. Application for all types of aid should be indicated on the application for admission. Complete applications accompanied by a statement of purpose, personal statement, official GRE general test scores (minimum score of 300 with a 4.0 on the writing), transcripts, and 3 letters of recommendation are due by January 15. Any delay beyond this date may reduce the chance of receiving an offer.

FELLOWSHIP SOURCES:
There are several outside fellowships that applicants can apply to directly.
SNAME
The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers awards at least 6 graduate scholarships each year to U.S. and Canadian citizens. The application deadline is February 1.

SMART
This program is intended for U.S. citizens to support the education and recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. This program is used to recruit and to retain civilian scientists and engineers to work at DoD agencies and laboratories. Recipients are awarded full tuition, educational fees, and a stipend. The application deadline is December 1st.

NDSEG
The Department of Defense offers a three-year, National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship for advanced study in fields which include naval architecture and marine engineering (U.S. citizens only). The application deadline is in early January.

The American Society of Naval Engineers sponsors scholarship programs to encourage students to enter the field of naval engineering (U.S. citizens only). Applications should be made by February 15.

GSI Policy
A 50% GSI will be assigned to the following NAME senior design/lab courses: NA 470, NA 492, NA 475
Any course taught by a NAME faculty member that has an enrollment of 55 or more students, or a laboratory class that has an enrollment of 32 or more students, will receive a 50% GSI. If enrollment exceeds 90, an additional GSI will be provided.
