Howard Fireman (NAME BSE ‘79, MSE ‘85) and Associate Professor David J. Singer (NAME BSE ‘95, MEng ‘97, IOE MSE ‘01, and NAME PHD ‘03) have been appointed to participate in the Department of the Navy’s newly established Science and Technology Board (DON STB). 

Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced recently the establishment of the Department of the Navy’s Science and Technology Board federal advisory committee with the purpose of focusing on science and technology as the service seeks to better invest its resources to stay ahead of potential adversaries in the long term as well as help make strategic decisions about where to invest limited funds. 

The board will provide independent advice and counsel to the Department of the Navy on matters and policies relating to scientific, technical, manufacturing, acquisition, logistics, medicine and business management functions.

The DON STB includes national security leaders who have served as Deputy Secretary of Defense, Secretary of the Navy, White House Director for Cybersecurity, and Chief Naval Architect. It includes industry executives with both technology and manufacturing expertise, as well as noted thought leaders from national research universities and University-Affiliated Research Center Laboratories

Former Secretary of the Navy Dr. Richard Danzig will serve as the Chair of the DON STB, saying, “The board’s highest priority will be to work with leaders in the Department of the Navy to match new opportunities in science and technology with present service needs.” 

Mr. Howard Fireman, former Chief Naval Architect of the Navy, has been appointed The Vice Chair of the DON STB while Associate Professor Singer will act as Expert Consultant with the role of providing technical expertise and experience toward developing the board’s deliverables. 

Of the position, Singer says, “I am honored for the opportunity to support the board in achieving its goals.”
