It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Thomas P. Mackey, alumnus of the University of Michigan’s Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) department, and a legendary figure in the maritime industry. Tom passed away on August 12th at the age of 84.
Tom’s maritime career was nothing short of extraordinary, spanning more than 50 years and leaving an indelible mark on the industry. He earned both his BSE and MSE degrees in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan, where he would later receive the prestigious Rosenblatt-Michigan Award in 1996 for his outstanding contributions to the field. His professional journey began at Zimmite Corp, which eventually merged with Hyde Marine, where Tom became owner and Chairman. Under his leadership, Hyde Marine flourished as an industry leader in maritime engineering.
Tom was widely respected for his professional accomplishments and dedication to advancing the field of naval architecture. He was a Life Fellow, Honorary Member, and Honorary Vice President of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME). His leadership extended into various roles, including Chairman of the T&R Steering Committee, Chairman of the Control Committee, and editor of the Hull Machinery chapter of the 1992 edition of Marine Engineering. His work earned him numerous accolades, including the Distinguished Service Award, Centennial Award, and the highly coveted 2005 Land Medal.
Tom’s expertise and influence reached beyond SNAME. He was a Fellow and Honorary Vice President of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST), where he co-chaired the Ballast Water Expert Group and served as a delegate to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). He was also a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), cementing his place as one of the foremost experts in maritime engineering on a global scale.
Closer to home, Tom’s impact was deeply felt in the Great Lakes Great Rivers Section of SNAME, where he served as Section Chair and as a member of the Executive Committee. As a charter member of the University of Michigan NAME Advisory Board, Tom’s insights and contributions helped guide the department’s vision, shaping the next generation of naval architects and marine engineers.
Tom Mackey’s legacy is one of dedication, innovation, and leadership in the maritime industry. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him, and his contributions to the field will continue to inspire future generations.
