APPLICATION PROCESS
STEP-BY-STEP

1. CREATE AN APPLY-WEB ACCOUNT (COLLEGENET) TO GET STARTED ON YOUR APPLICATION

Before you can submit an application for the first time, you’ll need to sign up for an account with CollegeNET, the application hosting service affiliated with Rackham Graduate School. Once you have a CollegeNET account, you’ll be able to log in any time and see your Activity Log, a personalized status page showing any applications you’ve started (so that you can continue your work on an in-progress application), as well as showing those applications you’ve already submitted.

2. ACADEMIC STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The Academic Statement of Purpose should be about your academic and research background, as well as your career goals.

3. PERSONAL STATEMENT

The Personal Statement should indicate how your background and life experiences, including cultural, geographical, financial, educational, and other opportunities or challenges, have motivated your decision to pursue a NAME graduate degree at the University of Michigan.

4. TRANSCRIPTS

For the online application, you can upload a copy of your official or unofficial transcript for a preliminary review by the NAME Admissions committee but make sure to mail the Official Transcript to the Rackham Graduate School.

All prospective students are required to submit an Official Transcript to the Rackham Graduate School.

Note: Please do not mail any official transcripts to the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering department.

5. GRE SCORES

Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores are:

  • Optional for all applicants to the PhD program.
  • Required for all applicants to the MS program from Non-US institutions.
  • Optional for applicants to the MS program from US institutions.

GRE tests scores are valid for 5 years. We look at the applicant’s highest GRE score, not the most recent.

Have ETS send your GRE scores to:

6. TOEFL, ECPE, IELTS, AND MELAB

Rackham English Proficiency Requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency unless they meet one of the Rackham English Proficiency Exemptions.

Language test scores are valid two years from the test date.

Have ETS send your TOEFL scores to:

  • Rackham Graduate School, ETS Code 1839

The ECPEIELTS, and MELAB scores:

  • Are mailed directly to the Rackham Graduate School from the testing agency. Mailing address: Rackham Graduate School, 915 E. Washington St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1070.

7. THREE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

Letters of recommendations are submitted through the Rackham online application by your recommenders. You will need to list all your recommender’s names and email addresses.

8. RESUME

A resume describes your education, work experience, research publications, teaching experience, professional activities, volunteer activity, community engagement, honors, and awards.
